In line with its national role in supporting digital transformation, data governance, and enhancing information security and safety, the General Information Authority participated today, Monday, October 19, 2026, in a specialized workshop organized by the Ministry of Interior titled “Virtual Assets: Between Regulation and Criminalization.” The workshop was held as part of national preparations for the upcoming Mutual Evaluation process of the State of Libya by the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF).

The General Information Authority was represented at the workshop by Mr. Nader Mleitan, Director of the National Database Department at the Authority.

The workshop witnessed the participation of several national institutions, sovereign, security, and financial bodies, alongside the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Discussions focused on the legal, regulatory, and technical dimensions of virtual assets and digital currencies, as well as the risks associated with their misuse in money laundering and terrorist financing.

The Authority’s participation stems from its core mandates in national data governance, managing and developing databases, and enhancing integration and data exchange among government institutions. These functions serve as essential enablers for supporting compliance and oversight systems, boosting the efficiency of information exchange and data verification, and strengthening the capabilities of competent authorities to counter digital financial risks in accordance with relevant legal frameworks and international standards.

The Authority emphasizes the importance of developing a comprehensive national framework for dealing with virtual assets—one that balances keeping pace with technological advances with security and compliance requirements, guided by the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), particularly Recommendation 15 on new technologies, virtual assets, and virtual asset service providers (VASPs).

Furthermore, the General Information Authority reaffirms its commitment to supporting national efforts aimed at enhancing the institutional and technical readiness of the State of Libya, as well as advancing data governance systems and digital integration. These efforts aim to raise compliance with international standards, protect the national economy, and foster trust in the digital environment.
